 The Oceanarium

The oceanarium is a very impressive view with its more than 4.5 mio liters of sea water and 2-3000 fish, shoals and the two sunfish Anton and Andrea.

The oceanarium which was opened in 1998 is designed to hold schooling, pelagic fish. It is of great importance that these fish have sufficient space – more space than in small traditional tanks – to allow them to show a natural behaviour. That is the reason why the oceanarium ended up being the largest aquarium of Northern Europe with a volume of 4.5 million litres of water. It is very important that the surface area is large (the Oceanarium is elliptical and measures 22 by 33 metres), but also the large depth (8 m) is necessary for the fishes´ schooling behaviour. The schools can choose depth and separate according to their species which they also do in the wild.

The oceanarium was destroyed by fire in December 2003 and reopened in July 2005.

The fish in the oceanarium are fed every day at 1 pm and during the summer holiday (July and August) equally at 4 pm.
